Here's an example of an MLA article citation:

MLA format includes the author's name, title of the article, title of the journal, volume number of the journal, issue number of the journal, date of the journal issue, name of the database, medium (i.e "web") and the date of access. Here is an example to follow (take careful note of punctuation):

Here's an example of an MLA book citation:

When you are gathering book sources, be sure to make note of the following bibliographic items: author name(s), book title, publication date, publisher, place of publication. And, the medium of publication for all “hard copy” books is Print.

Here's an example of an MLA entire website citation:

MLA no longer requires the use of URLs in MLA citations. Because Web addresses are not static (i.e. they change often) and because documents sometimes appear in multiple places on the Web (e.g. on multiple databases), MLA explains that most readers can find electronic sources via title or author searches in Internet Search Engines.

It is necessary to list your date of access because web postings are often updated, and information available on one date may no longer be available later. Be sure to include the url address between two triangle brackets if your professor insists on it.

Editor, author, or compiler name (if available). Name of Site. Name of institution/organization affiliated with the site (sponsor or publisher), date of resource creation (if available). Medium of publication. Date of access.

List films (in theaters or not yet on DVD or video) by their title. Include the name of the director, the distributor, and the release year. The Final Project is due on the last day of class.

The final assignment for LALT 101 will be a bibliography of sources which answer a specific research question. You will be compiling resources throughout the semester, organizing them using RefWorks. RefWorks is an online research management tool that allows you to collect and organize sources, as well as create citations and bibliographies. This project will be submitted as a blog entry. You may choose your own research question if you wish, so think about something that interests you. We have also provided some research questions from which you could choose, if you prefer.

A bibliography is a list of sources (such as books or journal articles). Each entry is made up of a citation, including information such as the title, author, publisher, journal name and more. Please use MLA format for this project. Here is an example of an entry in a bibliography:

Bagchi, Alaknanda. "Conflicting Nationalisms: The Voice of the Subaltern in Mahasweta Devi's Bashai Tudu." Tulsa Studies in Women's Literature . 15.1 (1996): 41-50.

Your bibliography will include the following sources:

a website
a current news article on topic
a popular non-news article
two scholarly articles
a book (available at AUC Library)
a film (available at AUC Library)

You must find these sources (except for the website) through the AUC Library, using the catalog and databases.

How do you find information online? How do you find the latest news? Do you use Google or news websites? Which sites do you trust?

Here are some helpful ways of finding news.

Access World News is a valuable local, regional, and national U.S. newspapers as well as full-text content of key international sources -- all in one easy-to-search database with a world map.

Google News is easy to use and very familiar. You can search for Arabic news, or news from several countries. Google News indexes news from online sources only, so you won't get stories from papers that don't have an online version. It's a better way to find news online than just doing a regular Google search.

Libary Press Display is a library database that shows you images of newspapers from around the world. It's a great choice for browsing recent news from different countries. When you are done with this database, make sure to click on "SIGN OUT."

Lexis Nexis is a great choice when you need to do a detailed, comprehensive news search. It is a library database with many different search options. This is also a good database to use when you are not allowed to use the internet for your research but need to find the latest news on your issue.

1. What is the latest story on this topic in Google News? Use RefGrab It to save the story to RefWorks.

Now search for your topic on Lexis Nexis.

Class Discussion
Academic disciplines define the rules for the fields that fall within them--for example, how people perform research, communicate their ideas, and talk to others in their field. How do your professors research in different fields? For example, how about Biologists? Historians? Anthropologists? Economists? Business researchers? Literature scholars? Discuss how each group of scholars performs research and how they present this research to others.

When you're researching a paper, a general database like Academic Search Complete can be a good place to start. Academic Search Complete is multidisciplinary, which means it has research from a wide range of fields. But when you need more specific information, you may want to look at a disciplinary or subject database. Subject databases represent research in specific academic fields.

Start this activity when you finish your midterm.
Log into your blog and answer questions 1-4 in a post:
1. What is your research question?
2. What academic disciplines relate to your research question? Here's a list of academic disciplines on Wikipedia. Choose at least three or four.
3. What AUC majors and minors relate to your research question? Choose at least three or four. Here's a list of AUC majors and minors to help you.
Now, go go the AUC Library website, and click on Find Articles. Scroll down to the bottom of the page, where it says "By Major." Choose the major that most relates to your topic (one of the answers from question three), and click on that link. Read the list of databases and their descriptions.
4. What are two databases that might help you research this topic more in-depth (please include the name)? How can you tell?

Let your instructor know when you've finished; if you don't have time to finish this activity in class, please do it for your homework.

Combining Keywords with AND
Instead of searching for a broad topic (egypt, globalization, malaria), think of how you can narrow it. You may need to think more narrowly about your research question before you begin your search. Here are different ways to narrow your topic and your search:

Geography: a country, city, or region
Demographics: children, adults, adolescents/teenagers, women, men, married couples, people from Italy, etc
Time period: year, century, decade, era (ie Middle Ages, 19th century, 1980s, World War II)
By discipline or area of study (ie globalization and the economy versus globalization and its effects on the environment)

You may limit your search to any combination of these areas. Here are some sample search statements that work in Academic Search Complete
media censorship AND egypt
racism AND teenagers AND europe

If your search is too narrow (racism AND sexism AND women AND bedouins AND sinai AND globalization), you won't get many results.

You may also need to find synonyms or related terms to get better search results (women/female; teenagers/adolescents; cairo/egypt).

Activity & Homework: Introduction to Blog
Blog 1
For your activity and homework, you will sign up for an account with wordpress.com, set up your blog, and write your first entry. Whatever you don't finish in class is your homework. Here are step-by-step directions.

Go to wordpress.com and sign up for a free account (click on the orange "Sign Up Now" button). Your user name will be the address of your blog, like this: http://username.wordpress.com. (You can sign up for a user name and not a blog. Don't do this.)
Name your blog. Be creative if you'd like, but Ahmed's LALT 101 Blog is also okay, if your name is Ahmed.
Write down your user name, password, and the address of your blog (so you can find it later).
Write your first entry. Your entry should include your first name, major, and year at AUC, as well as a link to your favorite website.
Add some links to your blog, in the blogroll. Link to the AUC Main Library homepage and link to the LALT 101 wiki. This will appear on the side or bottom of your blog.
Add a note to the Blackboard discussion board with the URL (web address) of your blog. If you are limiting your blog to just a few people, make sure to add your instructor's wordpress name to your blog.

Student Evaluation of Instruction
Please complete the evaluation for LALT! It will help us become better teachers.

Review for LALT 101 Final
The final will take place in our next class (not during exam period!). It will be similar to the mid-term and will cover information from Units 1-10. If you would like to prepare, read over the units in the wiki and let your instructor know if you have questions.

Finding information online and evaluating websites
Information is online for a reason: someone put it there. When you search the web, think about why someone created that website. Do they want to make money? Sell you a service? Educate you? Convince you? It's important to know their motivation so you can understand their bias and where their information might be inaccurate or incomplete.
